Senedd Member Joel James MS, has this week shared a contribution he made in the Senedd Chamber before the summer recess regarding Cardiff's Mansion House and the Council's plans to sell the property.
The Member highlighted:
Despite undergoing significant renovation in the 1990s, Cardiff Council now cites underuse and a maintenance backlog as the justification for disposing of Mansion House.
Joel highlighted how he had been contacted by residents who were concerned by the potential loss of this historic building for the city and many people see this move as another example of the council's disregard for the city's cultural and civic heritage.
The Member also highlighted to the First Minister that this step from the Council is not without precedent, with Joel highlighting the case of St David's Hall.
Closing his contribution, Joel stated that such actions raise serious concerns about the council's long-term commitment to not only preserving Cardiff's unique culture and civic identity, but how it manages the public assets that it looks after.
Sharing his contribution on social media, Joel said:
Cardiff’s Mansion House has been the official residence of Cardiff's Lord Mayors, and has hosted notable figures such as King George V, Winston Churchill and Nelson Mandela.
Considering that Cardiff Council has millions in reserves, do you agree that instead of running it into the ground and selling Mansion House, the council should present a clear plan to repurpose and preserve it for the benefit of the City?
