Senedd Member Joel James MS, has today, once again highlighted his concerns regarding RCT Council's decision to change its Home to School Transport Policy.
Starting in September, children living within a three-mile walk of their secondary school will no longer qualify for home-to-school transport, despite RCT Council having one of the largest usable reserve funds in Wales, holding a staggering £255 million in its bank account. Despite this, the Council repeatedly claims there is no money available, and now children in RCT are suffering from poor decision-making and budgeting.
Joel highlighted to the Trefnydd that:
Residents are concerned that this will mean their children will opt for the closest school rather than the school that best fits their needs, and this is already having a disproportionate impact on those who wish to attend Welsh-medium schools, as the council’s own findings predicted.
The Member also raised concerns about the proposed new walking routes, which many believe are unsafe, and where there is no alternative public transport option, all of which will mean increased car use and congestion.
Closing his remarks, Joel asked the Welsh Government to help rectify the situation and asked for a statement on the matter again today.
Speaking outside the Chamber, Joel said:
Rhondda Cynon Taf Council are continuing to push ahead with their changes to home-to-school transport in the County Borough - despite mass opposition.
These plans are already having a detrimental impact, which the Council fully knew would happen, and I again raised these concerns with the Welsh Government - asking them to get directly involved.
RCT Conservatives have led the way in opposing these plans, and Cllr Karl Johnson has continually challenged the Labour run council.
