Joel James MS, representing South Wales Central in the Welsh Parliament, has this week attended the launch of Cancer Research UK’s manifesto launch targeting cancer research and care in Wales.
The focus within the Welsh manifesto, ahead of the May Senedd elections next year, is to call on the Welsh Government to make a national commitment to reduce the cancer death rate in Wales by 15% by 2040, which would prevent around 5,500 cancer deaths in the next 15 years.
To achieve this, Cancer Research UK states that the Welsh Government needs to:
- Develop, fund and deliver a long-term cancer strategy to improve cancer outcomes and meet cancer waiting times targets.
- Support the NHS to deliver cancer services for everyone, both now and in the future.
- Combat lung cancer – the biggest cancer killer in Wales.
- Strengthen the research and innovation ecosystem to enable research to flourish and get innovations to patients faster.
Speaking after the event, Joel said:
It was great to attend the official launch of Cancer Research UK’s manifesto for cancer research and care in Wales at the Welsh Parliament this week.
Nearly 1 in 2 people in Wales are affected by cancer, and the number of new cases is projected to rise.
I support Cancer Research UK’s call on the next Welsh Government to commit to reducing the cancer death rate by 15% by 2040 – preventing around 5,500 deaths between now and 2040.
