Joel James MS has called on Welsh Government Minister Huw Irranca-Davies to correct comments made on BBC’s Politics Wales claiming the UK Government “did not contribute a penny” to the South Wales Metro.
Joel James MS said the statement was “factually incorrect and risks misleading the public.”
The South Wales Metro forms part of the Cardiff Capital Region City Deal — a joint programme backed by both the UK and Welsh Governments.
The UK Government also made a direct £125 million contribution to Metro delivery beyond the standard City Deal arrangements.
To say Westminster did not contribute even a penny is simply not accurate. We can disagree on policy — but we shouldn’t mislead taxpayers about how major Welsh infrastructure is funded.
The Welsh Conservatives have formally written to Huw Irranca-Davies MS, asking him to correct the public record.
Joel James MS added:
I am sure this was not intentional, but accuracy matters. It would be deeply concerning if Welsh Labour began promoting a false narrative about UK Government investment in Wales.
Cardiff and South Wales deserve the truth about who is funding our transport future.
