Reports of drug use, violent assaults, and human waste at a tent encampment in a Cardiff city centre underpass have left residents angry, fearful, and demanding action. The Welsh Conservatives say the disturbing situation is a direct result of the Labour Government’s long-standing failure to tackle homelessness and provide sustainable, compassionate support.
Joel James MS, Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Housing & Local Government, commented:
The shocking scenes that have unfolded in a popular Cardiff city underpass are a damning indictment of how the Labour-run Cardiff Council and the Welsh Government have failed to get a grip on homelessness.
Residents should not feel unsafe in their own city. Yet Labour’s failure to address rough sleeping and antisocial behaviour has left communities anxious and vulnerable people abandoned.
Behind every tent is a person in crisis—someone who’s been failed by a broken system. If Labour had a serious, sustainable plan to protect residents and support those in need with dignity, we wouldn’t be seeing people forced to sleep in dangerous conditions like this.
