Assisted Dying

This month (October 2024), the Welsh Parliament will debate whether assisted dying should be legalised in Wales.

While this matter is outside the devolved powers of the Senedd, Members will hold their own debate and participate in a symbolic vote to express their personal views.

I have several concerns about the potential passing of an assisted dying law in England and Wales. My primary concern is based on numerous documented cases indicating that when assisted dying laws are introduced, they often lead to serious issues, including coercion by relatives and the selection of specific doctors who are willing to perform euthanasia.

I also believe it would set a dangerous precedent and could result in a range of unintended consequences if implemented in the UK.

Additionally, it worries me that if such a law were passed, it might subsequently be expanded, following the patterns seen in the Netherlands and Belgium, where laws have extended to children, or in Canada, where, starting in 2027, individuals suffering solely from mental health issues - without any physical conditions - will be eligible for assistance in dying.

I’m eager to hear your thoughts on this matter and would appreciate it if you could complete the survey below.

Assisted Dying Survey:

Do you believe assisted dying should be legalised in England and Wales?
Do you think assisted dying should be exclusively for those with a terminal illness?
Do you believe the friends and family of a person opting for assisted dying have the right to know about this decision?
Do you think the UK should follow the example of the Netherlands and Belgium by extending assisted dying to children?
Do you believe the UK should follow Canada’s lead in allowing assisted dying for individuals suffering solely from mental health issues?
